The Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary is a place where every bird photographer would love to visit. During one of my trips to Ranganthittu along with my friend Savitha, we saw a Pied Kingfisher come and perch on a branch. We started shooting and as we went close by, we saw that it had a fish in its beak. While shooting I was thrilled to see its actions. I was wondering why is it doing all this circus just to swallow a fish. I came back and did some research on it. So here is what I learnt. The kingfisher after catching a fish, perches on a branch and hits it against the perch to kill the fish. The beating not only kills the fish but also breaks the spine so that the bird can swallow the prey easily.
Once the fish is dead, the fish has to be brought into the right position so that the mouth goes first.
The position is still not Ok, so again the next trial starts.
Looks like it has got the grip and look at the next steps!
“Yes, I made it” and now just the tail is out!
A happy and satisfied look after swallowing the fish and may be ready to fish the next 🙂
